Former President Muhammadu Buhari was praised by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who said that Buhari served Nigeria without stealing from the country’s coffers.

During Thursday’s extended Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja honouring Buhari, Akpabio made the remarks.

The Senate President made the observation that even those who were critical of the former president would agree that he did not embezzle any public funds while in office.

Allow me to be honest—he was a real handful, he admitted. He was fearless in the face of enemy fire, a leader who refused to shirk his responsibilities, and most importantly, a Nigerian whose allegiance to his country was unwavering.

“His resoluteness stemmed from a deep sense of patriotism, an unwavering conviction that Nigeria, despite its many obstacles, remained a cause worthy of struggle,” the author writes. There are those that disagree with him.

That is how democracies work. He did not steal from the nation’s boss or give in to its demands until the very end, even his harshest detractors would concede.

Ministers, governors, members of the National Assembly leadership, and the late leader’s children, headed by Yusuf, were present at the special FEC meeting.

The ex-governor of Akwa Ibom State went on to say that Buhari was a leader who did not shy away from challenges, and that he wanted responsibility more than fame.

President Buhari did more than just walk the halls of power; he walked them, leaving his footprints and bootsprints. Leadership, even in times of isolation, must be based on principles higher than authority, he continued, and he thought discipline and integrity were paramount.

According to furucinovel, Buhari was the head of state for two terms, from 1983 to 1985 in the military and from 2015 to 2023 in the civilian capacity.

At the age of 82, he passed away on Sunday at a London facility and was laid to rest in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.
