While speaking with reporters at his Yola residence, Abubakar Girei said that the federal student loan program should be administered in an honest and open manner.

Addressing societal roots is also important. Knowledge is power. Back in our day, we could attend craft schools to study various trades. Girei bemoaned the loss of those, saying that their return would be beneficial to the country’s economic growth.

Relating the matter to Adamawa State, Girei mentioned that under the tenure of Governor Murtala Nyako (2007–2014), skill centers were reintroduced in the state. These centers provided skilled labor to large companies like the Dangote Group.

He bemoaned the fact that the centers for skill development are currently inoperable and urged the federal government and individual governments to place a premium on reading and life skills programs.

Although many students and institutions have profited from the present federal student loan program, Senator Girei expressed concern over certain reports of fraud surrounding disbursement.

“The program is commendable and deserves to be continued, but in order for it to be successful, we need to eradicate corruption,” he stated.
