Provost of the College of Education in Abia suspended; panel reports on case

The report of the panel of inquiry appointed by the Abia State Government to examine Professor Vincent Onwe, the suspended provost of the Abia State College of Education (Technical) in Arochukwu, has been presented.

In her report to Professor Kenneth Kalu, Secretary to the Abia State Government, Professor Regina Ogbonna, chairman of the Independent Committee, noted that the group had been given 21 days to finish their task and produce a report, as well as specific terms of reference.

She started by expressing her gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for appointing the Panel to serve the state. She went on to say that the report was finalised after a number of in-person and online meetings, memoranda, and interviews with specific individuals.

Upon receiving the report, Professor Kenneth Kalu, Secretary to the Abia State Government, was accompanied by Ikechuckwu Uwanna, Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Abia State, to describe the examination of events at the Abia State College of Education (Technical) as a delicate undertaking.

He made the point that the assignment’s need for principle, due process, honesty, and integrity became apparent the moment the panel was formed.

After promising that the government would follow the report’s recommendations, Professor Kalu praised the committee for its sober, diligent, and obviously truthful approach to the task at hand.

Professor Uche Eme-Uche, the Abia State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, thanked the committee for their dedication in finishing the report despite pressure from different directions in her remarks.

Professor Vincent Onwe was appointed to the panel to investigate his administration following his suspension as provost of Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, in April 2025, as reported in the furucinovel.
