In an effort to increase national security, the Northern Governors Forum (NGF) has urged the National Assembly to pass a law establishing state police.

The call was contained in a communique at the end of the Forum’s meeting on Saturday, which was read by its Chairman, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, according to a press release from Mamman Mohammed, Director General of Press and Media Affairs to the Yobe State Governor.
In a statement made by Governor Yahaya, the Forum expressed its support for the establishment of state police and urged the National Assembly to move quickly in establishing the necessary legal provisions for its launch.
A more effective fight against insurgency, banditry, and other crimes was also determined at the Forum: an increase in interstate border surveillance.
It was also appreciative of the federal government’s efforts to fix Nigeria’s infrastructure problems and security issues.

In response to the security threats, the Forum reaffirmed its intention to work in tandem with the Nigeria Governors Forum.
Nineteen governors from the north and the chairs of the traditional rulers’ states were present at the gathering.
