Niger court remands six individuals accused of kidnapping

Six people, including a married woman, have been sentenced to remain in correctional custody for alleged kidnapping by a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Minna. Regardless of the defendants’ pleas, the court determined that it does not have the authority to hear the case.

Jibrin Ahmadu, A’isha Sani, Abuh Mohammed, Daudu Mohammed, Mamman Sani, Shehu Arzika Laura, and the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Niger State Police Command were all apprehended. Four counts have been filed against them: conspiracy, kidnapping, and illegal possession of weapons.

Mai-Kyau Malam, a 22-year-old lady from Marrando village, was allegedly abducted from her residence by the accused, according to the Police First Information Report.

The suspects allegedly demanded N9 million in ransom, which was then reduced to N5 million, according to the police. Four of the defendants entered guilty pleas and two entered not guilty ones during the court proceedings.

Chief Magistrate Hajiya Ummulkhatum Mohammed stated that the court does not have the authority to find the defendants guilty and to impose a punishment because such matters are exclusively within the purview of the High Court.

The defendants were ordered to remain in custodial prison till the result of the case, which Magistrate Mohammed scheduled to 6 May 2025 for further mention.
