My critics despise me because to my dad’s wealth – Davido

Afrobeats musician David Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido, claims that his privileged background makes him the most criticized celebrity in Nigeria.

According to Davido, if he hadn’t initially masked his upbringing, the “rich kid” reputation might have hampered his career.

Speaking in a recent episode of the Culture Knock Out podcast, the OBO crooner explained that he already scored a couple of hit songs when his background became public knowledge.

His claim was that he was the most heavily criticized musician in Nigeria. You might say I’ve been hot for some time now; I’m really hot right now. They had no idea my dad was wealthy at first. I didn’t experience the extreme stigma that should have accompanied being a wealthy kid who pursued music.

Nobody knew my dad had a fortune. Before they discovered that my dad was wealthy, I had already recorded three successful songs, so it was too late.

I simply desired to pursue music, though. Even if it meant becoming homeless, I didn’t care. I wanted to do nothing else at that moment. I would overcome any obstacle.

Because my dad is wealthy, I began to attract the ire of everyone around me. It keeps working out, though, since I keep releasing quality songs.

Once you reach the pinnacle of your field, you will inevitably face criticism. Many people support you in this election because they adore you. However, once you assume the presidency, they despise you.
