For his work this past year with club and nation, the Spain international is deserving of the top individual accolade, says Matthäus. Yamal had a standout season for Barcelona in every competition last year.

The teenager, who is currently considered the world’s most valuable player, scored 18 goals in all competitions for Hansi Flick’s squad.

The Blaugrana won LaLiga and the Copa del Rey with the 17-year-old. Spain lost in a penalty shootout against Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final, which he also helped lead.

“If I could cast a vote for the Ballon d’Or this year, my vote would go to Lamine Yamal,” Matthäus reportedly told @TouchlineX.

Along with other top players like Raphinha, Ousmane Dembélé, Kylian Mbappé, and Mohamed Salah, Yamal is a serious contender for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
