Shortly after the news of Buhari’s death spread on Sunday evening, Tinubu revealed this in a touching memorial that he personally signed.
Full state honours will be bestowed upon Buhari, the president has declared.
All national flags shall fly at half-staff throughout the nation for seven days beginning today, as a gesture of respect to our late leader,” Tinubu stated in his letter.
“I have also called an emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council for Tuesday, to be held in his honour,” he continued.
President Buhari expressed his deep grief and heavy heart at Buhari’s departure, saying that Nigeria has lost “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman.”
A true patriot, soldier, and statesman, President Buhari exemplified all three. Service and sacrifice are his legacies that go on.
Throughout his time in Nigeria, he was a steadfast leader, first in the military (January 1984–August 1985) and then as president (2015–2023) elected by the people.
“In his life, duty, honour, and a profound dedication to the harmony and advancement of our country were the defining characteristics,” Tinubu stated.
“Stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakeable belief in Nigeria’s potential,” the president said of Buhari. He spoke highly of Buhari’s fight against corruption and efforts to establish discipline in government.
“He relentlessly battled corruption, encouraged discipline in public service, and prioritised the country above all else,” Tinubu remarked.
President Tinubu paid respect to the late president and offered his deepest sympathies to Aisha Buhari, their children, and the whole Buhari family.
He also acknowledged the people and traditional leadership of Daura, the late leader’s hometown in Katsina State.
“In this moment of national mourning, I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, with whom I have been in constant touch, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him.”
He spoke highly of the people and traditional leaders of Daura Emirate and offered his condolences to the government and people of Katsina State.
In his prayer for Buhari’s eternal rest, President Tinubu told Nigerians that the Federal Government will arrange a funeral befitting his “towering contributions to our country.”
His service is respected. We consider his impact. “May Allah pardon his transgressions and bestow upon him Al-Jannah Firdaus. We ask that he rest in peace,” he murmured, continuing his prayer. His legacy should encourage future generations of Nigerians to follow in his footsteps and serve their country with integrity, bravery, and sacrifice.
