Manchester United’s left-back, Luke Shaw, has expressed his apologies to his former manager, Erik ten Hag, admitting that he fell short during the Dutchman’s tenure at the club.

Erik ten Hag managed Manchester United from 2022 to 2024. In that time, he secured both the EFL Cup and the FA Cup.

However, following a string of losses at the beginning of the 2024-25 season, the Red Devils made the decision to dismiss him in October of the previous year.

Shaw featured in only 62 matches for Manchester United under Ten Hag, contributing one goal and eight assists.

He shared with The Athletic that he felt he wasn’t there for the Dutchman when he needed support the most.

“I felt a bit like I let Erik down with all the injuries and everything,” he remarked.

“I wasn’t there for him towards the end, and it was disheartening. Throughout much of last season, I felt like I disappointed a lot of people. The dismissal of the former Ajax manager did not resolve Manchester United’s struggles last season.

He was succeeded by Ruben Amorim, who came from Sporting CP in November last year, and he managed to guide the team to a 15th place finish in the Premier League and a loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

Ten Hag has since taken on the role of Bayer Leverkusen manager, succeeding Xabi Alonso, who is now with Real Madrid.
