Governor Yusuf pays tribute to Kano athletes killed in car tragedy

The names of the twenty-two Kano athletes who died in a car crash in May 2025 on the way back from the National Sports Festival have been immortalised by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf.

At a ceremony in Kano’s Government House, Yusuf made the news. Name change for Kano State Sports Institute: “Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute” (his words).

Further, the governor announced that the Kano State Sports Commission will be renamed to the “Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission” in memory of the athletes who passed away while representing the state.

“Kano was proud of these young heroes. They deserve eternal remembrance. “We will never forget their dedication and selflessness to the state,” the governor declared.

Officials from First Lady Mrs. Remi Tinubu paid a polite visit to the grieving relatives and informed the governor of the donation of N110 million.

He thanked the First Lady for the gift to the families, stating that they were experiencing unfathomable sorrow.

The First Lady, Her Excellency, has our deepest gratitude for this kind donation. According to the governor, these families are experiencing unfathomable loss, and this act of generosity offers them both solace and acknowledgement. Yusuf assured the bereaved relatives that they will continue to receive help from the Kano administration.

The tragedy, which happened only five kilometres from Kano, rocked the country and sent the sports community into grief, according to furucinovel.

It was claimed that the athletes had given amazing achievements while representing Kano at the National Sports Festival, and they were going home.

The slain athletes were heroes who battled for Kano State’s achievement and deserve to be immortalised for their patriotism and excellence, according to a statement by Mustapha Muhammad, the chief press secretary of the governor.

The statement claims that renaming the two major sports facilities will serve as a lasting memorial to the brave people who have worn the state’s colours with pride and as a reminder to all generations of the sacrifices they have made.
