His death has shocked Benue State, Nigeria, and its Christian population, who held him in high esteem for turning Tiv Swange’s music into an effective tool for gospel proclamation.
During a mourning visit to his residence in Makurdi, Chief Samuel Ortom, a former governor of Benue State, led tributes to the late gospel icon. In the presence of the Brethren Prayer Group, Ortom praised Ikyereve as a devout Christian whose songs had an impact much beyond Nigeria.
“His songs moved me deeply as a Christian,” Ortom stated. “I was so captivated by him that I sought out a personal relationship, which sparked a deep and meaningful connection with his family.”
According to the ex-governor, he once saw a Tiv man teaching music on an international program in Australia with the late singer’s songs playing in the background.
Ortom said this proved without a reasonable doubt how far-reaching the gospel ministry of Ikyereve had been.
He promised the family that he would not leave them or the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe after the funeral, and he prayed for them.
The late singer’s older brother, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, spoke on the family’s behalf and conveyed their deepest appreciation to Ortom for his persistent encouragement during the singer’s sickness and beyond.
It was revealed by him that one of Israel’s sons was given the name “Ortom” in recognition of the previous governor’s caring engagement in their life.
Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo, who are both leaders of the Brethren Prayer Group, also conducted prayers.
Several relatives, four children, and his wife Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, who is also a gospel singer, are among those who will remember the late artist.
Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, in the Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, is where his funeral will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2025.
