The warning, detailed in a circular signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, indicated that certain Northern states may face heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding.
The circular identified Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Borno as states at risk, urging stakeholders to stay alert and report any developing incidents.
“Certain northern settlements are likely to experience heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding during the period of August 25 to 29, 2025,” the circular stated. “We encourage relevant stakeholders on the Centre’s platform to provide updates on any emerging situations in their respective states.”
Adamawa and Katsina have the highest number of towns flagged. In Adamawa, Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo are on the list, while in Katsina, Katsina town, Kaita, and Bindawa are under observation.
Other at-risk locations include Gwaram in Jigawa, Nafada in Gombe, Ngala in Borno, Sumaila in Kano, Anka in Zamfara, and Makira in Sokoto. Bokani also mentioned that Bauchi State has two major towns, Azare and Jama’are, being closely monitored.
The Center had previously issued similar alerts across seven northern states, advising communities along the flood plains of the River Niger to evacuate due to increasing water levels.
