This decision comes in the wake of a train derailment that occurred on August 26, 2025, close to Jerre, while the train was traveling from Abuja to Kaduna.
As stated by Janet McDickson Noah, the Director of Press and Information, the minister has instructed that a committee be formed, including all relevant stakeholders, to investigate both the immediate and deeper causes of the event.
The committee will also put forward recommendations for preventive measures and identify ways to improve the safety and efficiency of rail transport in Nigeria. Concerned about passenger safety, Alkali has appointed Musa O. Ibrahim to lead the committee.
The committee’s members also include Prof. Danwaka Shuaibu; Engr. Zirra Finbar; Barr. Omotola Olusegun (serving as secretary); Dr. Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation; Engr. I.A. Ebuniwe; along with representatives from Technics Engineering, Architecture Marketing Nig. Ltd, CCECC, civil society organizations, and both male and female passengers.
