The Uromi and Uzea towns have had their scrap metal dealings abruptly halted, according to Furucinovel, which cites Mr. Paul Uhomesili, the interim chairman of the Esan North-East Local Government Area. The recent wave of violence in the regions spurred the two municipal administrations to take action.

The restriction is meant to curb criminal activities and improve the general security architecture of the area, according to a statement dated 17 April 2025 by Hon. Zikanene Momodu Oyakhamoh, secretary to the Etsako West Local Government. The statement cited Hon. Valentine Okwilague, acting chairman of the council.

According to Oyakhamoh, the decision was made to address the increasing feeling of insecurity in the area, with the goal of making inhabitants’ lives safer.

The imposition of motorbike limits is part of a larger effort to increase nighttime security and decrease crime rates in various local government areas of Edo State and beyond.

Everyone involved, including residents, is expected to follow the order and help the law enforcement officers tasked with enforcing it.

He stated that the Nigerian government had informed the relevant security services, which included the police, the DSS, and the NSCDC, and that they should start enforcing the order right away.

Mr. Paul Uhomesili, who is acting as chairman of the Esan North-East Local Government Area in Edo State, has announced that all scrap metal dealer activities in the Uromi and Uzea towns will be immediately suspended. A statement was released by the chairman’s chief press secretary, Oriwoh Henry, conveying the decision.

Anyone caught scavenging for scrap metal after 22 April 2025 would be prosecuted for their illegal actions, according to the statement dated 15 April 2025.

Residents’ growing concerns over the dealers’ suspected involvement in illegal acts like vandalism and theft led to this decision, according to Uhomesili.

Among the many crimes perpetrated by scrap metal sellers, according to locals, is the theft of electrical wires, used plastics, and metals from landfills, as well as the vandalization of private residences and public buildings.

He explained that the decision to suspend the scrap metal dealers’ operations was based on allegations of vandalism of cables, wires, and properties owned by the government, the public, and individuals, as well as chronic harassment and nuisance caused by their activities.

In addition, the acting chairmen ordered everyone who is engaged in scrap metal trading to show up to the office of the local government council so that they can be properly identified and profiled.
