Cross River advocates for the conservation of native gorillas

The government of Cross River State has reiterated its dedication to halting the extinction of gorillas within its forests. Experts have voiced concerns regarding the rapidly declining population of gorillas.

The estimated number of these animals stands at merely 300. This decline has been linked to ongoing hunting, bush burning, and various human activities.

During the launch of the Boki Gorilla Carnival and Festival, along with the introduction of the Miss Wildlife Queen Beauty Pageant, Mrs. Eme Affiah, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts, underscored the state’s exceptional ecological wealth.

“Our expansive forests are home to rare wildlife species, including gorillas, which serve as a significant attraction for tourism,” she remarked.

“We don’t need to struggle to promote our tourism sites. We have an abundance of gorillas in Boki LGA—not just images, but actual gorillas. We are a natural habitat for wildlife and game reserves.”

Affiah further noted that the government is actively backing conservation organizations and experts focused on wildlife protection, especially gorilla conservation, due to its substantial tourism potential.

Senator Eteng Williams, who represents the Cross River Central Senatorial District and chaired the event, also spoke, affirming his strong commitment to wildlife preservation, natural resource conservation, and community empowerment.

He highlighted the necessity for a future where tourism and heritage conservation fuel economic development, create opportunities for women and youth, and protect the state’s rich biodiversity.

Praising the initiative, Williams remarked that the festival has the capacity to uplift local communities while maintaining the beauty and splendor of the natural environment.

In his opening remarks, Chief Emmanuel Asu Abang, the event’s convener, stressed the significance of collective action in conservation.

“This is more than just a festival,” he stated. “It is a vibrant celebration of our commitment to preserving our natural heritage.”
