The Welsh team got off to a flying start in the first half thanks to goals from Ollie Rathbone and Sam Smith. The third goal came in the 81st minute from Smith, who had a record-breaking £2 million transfer to the club.

Wrexham moved up to second position in League One and clinched the last automatic promotion berth with the win, behind league winners Birmingham City.

After being demoted from the league at the end of the 1981–82 season, Wrexham have made a triumphant comeback to English football’s second tier with their promotion.

Before the game, Charlton and Wycombe Wanderers were the only two clubs in the division that could prevent Wrexham from securing second place.

After Wycombe’s 1-0 loss to Leyton Orient away earlier in the day, Wrexham went into their last home game of the season knowing that a victory would secure a record-tying third consecutive promotion.

With the exception of one club in the inaugural 1888 season, no English football club has ever managed to get promoted to the highest division three times in a row.
