On Wednesday, Alhaji Aliko Dangote stepped down as chairman of the firm, and Ekpe was appointed to replace him. Twenty years of Dangote’s stewardship of the corporation came to a close with his retirement.

Yesterday, Company Secretary Temitope Hassan made a statement announcing that his retirement will be effective as of June 16, this year.

2. He was born in Nigeria on August 3, 1953. After graduating in 1972 from King’s College, Lagos, he proceeded abroad for his tertiary study.

3. Ekpe gained a First Class Honours degree in Engineering from the University of Manchester during his time as a Shell Scholar (1973–1976).

4. After that, he went on to Manchester Business School (1977–1979) and earned an MBA.

5. Ekpe began his professional journey in 1977 as a Wireline Logging Engineer with Schlumberger SA.

6. In 1979, he became an executive assistant to the CEO of Alcan Aluminium Nigeria.

7. Ekpe began his career in banking in the early 1980s, taking the position of Head of Strategy at International Merchant Bank, a subsidiary of First Chicago.

8. He went on to become the Group Chief Executive Officer of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, a position he occupied until he retired in 2012. He has been with Dangote Sugar Refinery since 2024 in the role of Independent Non-Executive Director.
