Acting CMD allegedly extended tenure by manipulating age data, according to whistleblowers

Dr. Theo Onyuku, who is now serving as the acting Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Calabar, has been the target of criticism following allegations that he unjustly extended his tenure by three years by providing false information about his age.

During a press conference in Calabar on Sunday, the workers unions representing the hospital and the Concerned Citizen Right (CSR) organisation made the accusation.

However, in response, the acting CMD acknowledged being aware of the accusations but chose not to speak further due to the ongoing investigation.

His detractors, he said, are actively working to thwart his rise to the position of chief medical director. Someone in a position of power will inevitably face opposition, he warned.

The CMD, who was allegedly supposed to have left the military on June 6, 2025, had also altered other personnel documents, giving him three alternative birthdates, according to the whistleblowers. They said he was trying to buy more time at the hospital by doing this.

Noting that the facility is in a state of disrepair, the organisation demanded that the president launch an investigation into the claim.

“We urge President Bola Tinubu to establish an impartial commission to probe the wilful corruption and fabrication of patient records at the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital in Calabar, Cross River,” Mr. Patrick Umoh told reporters about the claims.

He brought up the fact that the hospital issue has persisted for a long time and has impacted the level of service that the personnel provides.

He went on to say that the hospital administration is at odds with the unions due to accusations of corruption and record fabrication.

He claims that the Ministry of Health has been informed of the complaints but has done nothing to resolve them. The Ministry of Health appears to have instead aligned itself with management.

The fact that the ministry has chosen to do nothing in light of all the evidence that has been made public is alarming.

The hospital employees who spoke out about these abnormalities are now the targets of threats and harassment.

Umoh emphasised that the President should intervene directly and appoint someone outside of the government to conduct a comprehensive probe.

He went on to explain that a staff meeting was arranged at the conference hall on June 18, 2025, by the chief medical director, and that this meeting was an attempt by the CMD to intimidate the personnel. He called out the employees as infidels for having the audacity to bring these accusations to light.
