During a press briefing on Monday, Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu stated that homeowners found to be living in unsanitary conditions would face prosecution under Abia’s environmental regulations.
Kanu shared the results of this week’s executive council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti, mentioning that the sanitary policy aims to improve the health of Abia residents and encourage good hygiene practices.
Additionally, the commissioner noted that government-run hospitals and primary health centers are experiencing a rise in patient visits, which he attributes to the government’s efforts in upgrading these facilities.
He also announced that 103,000 individuals have signed up for the Abia State formal sector insurance scheme, exceeding the original goal of 100,000.
Kanu reassured residents in the informal sector that they will be included in the second phase of the insurance initiative, aimed at enhancing their access to quality healthcare services.
Furthermore, the Abia government has announced that it has received approval from the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) to take control of the inactive Star Paper Mill.
The government explained that the paper mill will be transferred to private investors under strict oversight to prevent mismanagement, and that efforts will also be made to revive other inactive companies to generate employment opportunities.
