During the discussion of the bill, titled ‘H. B. No. 923/ OG/ 2025- The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2025’, the Deputy Speaker and sponsor, Bolanle Ajayi, emphasized that this legislation is designed to ensure fair representation, uphold social justice, and eradicate discrimination against vulnerable populations in all sectors, thus fostering equality and the development of all sectors and human resources.
Ajayi characterized the bill as a crucial step towards institutionalizing inclusive governance and speeding up progress in various fields.
Supporting the Deputy Speaker, Chief Whip Omolola Bakare and Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye also highlighted that the bill reflects the sponsors’ commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities, broadening access, and minimizing the marginalization of the physically challenged and other vulnerable groups.
In response, Speaker Oludaisi Elemide reiterated the importance of tackling various forms of marginalization faced by vulnerable groups and the underprivileged in society to enhance gender mainstreaming and inclusion.
The Speaker pointed out that the design of many public facilities in the country disadvantages individuals with disabilities, an issue that must be addressed.
He then referred the bill to the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development for further legislative consideration.
