The assailants reportedly arrived in a large group, opened fire randomly, scattering vendors and customers before destroying the famous Kware Market, according to eyewitnesses.

The death toll is one, and several people are in serious condition at a hospital in Sokoto city, where they are undergoing treatment.

Vanguard reports that an eyewitness, Malam Zaharadeen Kware, from the area, said that the assailants appeared to have gone after the store of an unknown big businessman.

The store owner was lucky that the bandits didn’t find out about his closing just yet. But then they went ahead and burned down his store along with the entire market.

There is mounting suspicion that the town of Kware, which is situated along the Sokoto-Illela Road, has informants who support criminal groups; the community has long been plagued by instability. The coordinated attack has only served to strengthen this notion.

Attacks have been commonplace in the town that is home to Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan Iya, a former deputy governor of Sokoto State, among others.

Nevertheless, locals have spoken about this most recent attack as particularly terrible, saying that it has caused enormous damage to property and livelihoods. As of this writing, no arrests have been made despite the deployment of security officers to the area.
