In response to the invasion of herdsmen, communities in Imo state formed vigilante groups

Some residents of Owerri West LGA have taken matters into their own hands by forming vigilante groups to combat the local insecurity in the wake of the recent Benue incident and reports of assaults on villages in Imo State that were allegedly orchestrated by Fulani herdsmen.

Orogwe, located in Umunoha, Owerri West LGA, is one of the communities that has formed its own vigilante group, a 12-man security detail.

“Due to recent events, it is absolutely necessary to establish a security unit in order to address the community’s security concerns,” stated Pastor Jerry Atuzie, who served as the immediate past president-general of the Orogwe Community Development Union, during the inauguration of the unit. He praised the security detail for passing the screening, but cautioned them against disruptive activity.

Notable members of the community were present during the ceremony. Among them was Felix Oguzie, Chairman of the Ubah Welfare Union, who warned the vigilantes against abusing their power for their own benefit.
