According to furucinovel’s reporting, the ex-Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly allegedly hosted a cult gathering at his home, when the situation erupted into violence.
The charge is made in response to recent cult-related incidents in the Iruekpen hamlet in Esan West Local Government Area, where multiple individuals allegedly suffered injuries of different severity.
On Sunday, 9 June 2025, the lone politician representing Edo State in the National Assembly, who is a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), refuted the allegations, including any link to the clashes.
He insisted the accusations were baseless and full of falsehoods, and that they seemed to be politically motivated in an effort to destroy his honour.

“Let it be noted that according to credible sources, I have been informed that the altercation started between two indigenous people from the Iruekpen community at a brothel in the cattle market and not near my home,” he stated. Nonetheless, the legislator’s home was marked for demolition by state officials on Tuesday.
Onobun criticised the planned demolition, saying it was unlawful, and he asked the government to prove their claims.
Officially, no one contacted me. There was no investigation and the court made no ruling. What we have in Edo State is an obviously anti-opposition statute. It should be possible to convince me if you believe I possess qualities that your party lacks, he said.

In addition, he remembered that Chief Francis Inegbineki’s house and the hotel of PDP governorship campaign director general Hon. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen were also slated for demolition.
