Premier League promotion secured as Sunderland shock Sheffield in championship playoff final

In Saturday’s Championship playoff final, Sunderland rallied from a goal behind to defeat Sheffield United, 2-1. As Chris Wilder’s squad dominated the first half at Wembley, the Black Cats found themselves disadvantaged.

After a stunning counterattack, it was Sheffield who went ahead. The play was completed by Tyrese Campbell. Nevertheless, Sunderland seized control of the game in the second half.

In the 94th minute, the game was levelled thanks to a goal by the impressive Eliezer Mayenda, and the victory was completed in extra time by the leaving Tom Watson. After an absence of five years, Sunderland will finally play in the Premier League again.

They became the third club this season to be promoted to the English Premier League, behind Burnley and Leeds United.
