Why I ceased attending religious services – Seyi Shay

Seyi Shay, a musician from Nigeria, has spoken out about her decision to stop visiting her previous church. She justified her actions by saying that a church leader had suggested they return to traditional Christian hymns and songs that “are direct scripture” rather than more modern gospel tunes.

The church leader’s joy in singing songs composed by “slave owners” and handed down through centuries while touring African ancestors is incomprehensible to Shay, who cannot understand why they would do so.

She emphasised that being ignorant is not good and asked Christians to study traditional Christian hymns and songs before singing them.

A previous church leader of hers once declared, “We need to stop singing all these new age gospel songs in praise and worship and go back to singing hymns and only songs that are direct scripture…” in reference to her Instagram story.

“Well, I decided I no longer wanted to attend that church. Time to pause. For the simple reason that I fail to understand how or why you might find joy in singing the melodies that your forefathers were enslaved to sing as they bore and tormented you. Seems to lack logic. Get educated! God does not bless ignorance.
