Justice Simon A. Amobeda ruled that the court did not have the authority to hear the case, which centered on claims of illegal film downloads and copyright infringement.

In response to allegations of illegal film copyright practices in the state of Kano, Amart Enterprises requested judicial intervention to stop the Kano State Censorship Board from meddling with the business.

The Association of Kano Film Downloaders formally petitioned the Censorship Board, sparking a conflict that has persisted for several years. According to the group’s claims, Amart Enterprises broke copyright rules and disregarded agreements that were in place to control the distribution and downloading of films.

Alhaji Abba El-mustapha, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Censorship Board, expressed his delight at the decision and stressed its importance for the creative sector in the state in his reaction to the court’s decision.

The result of the case has satisfied us. All people, regardless of their level or influence, must follow the law, and this ruling further supports our stance on that matter,” El-mustapha stated.

He went on to say that the board’s priorities include equity and the defense of the state’s IP rights. Everyone has my undivided attention, but especially the powerless. If we want this sector to thrive, everyone must do their part to keep it legal.

Feelings will not be tolerated. Friendships and family cannot trump legal obligations. He stressed that they were present to safeguard creative work and guarantee fair play.

In order to foster professionalism and sustainability, El-mustapha emphasized the importance of all parties involved in the entertainment and film business carefully following the rules and regulations established by the board.

As the entertainment industry continues to expand, the court’s decision is anticipated to pave the way for future copyright-related litigation in the state.
