Outrage swept the subregion after the incident on April 17, 2025, which killed multiple people and injured many more.

President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray of the ECOWAS Commission conveyed his profound sadness over the tragedy and offered his sympathies to the Beninian government and people in a statement released in Abuja.

He hoped the wounded would get better soon as well. In a statement, the ECOWAS Commission expressed its continued support and solidarity with the President of the Republic of Benin, the government, and the people of Benin during this challenging period.

As Dr. Touray pointed out, regional solidarity and cooperation are critical in meeting the rising security challenges in West Africa, and the bloc is determined to back Benin in its battle against terrorism.

In light of the multi-faceted and long-lasting terrorist threat in the area, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has urged its member nations, particularly those that share borders and are thus directly impacted by extremist violence, to work together more closely.

Joint military operations, information sharing, and the operationalization of the ECOWAS Standby Force were all emphasized by the Commission as crucial components of a coordinated response to terrorist actions.

Further, the statement emphasized that “ECOWAS remains firmly committed to the implementation of its regional counter-terrorism strategy,” and it called on foreign allies to back national and regional initiatives to eradicate terrorism and secure West African nations.
