He highlighted that residents have the opportunity to receive free education, reaffirming his government’s dedication to nurturing future leaders from the state’s youth.
These comments were made by Governor Otti during the 75th birthday celebration of Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, a 2023 presidential aspirant from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), held at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Umuahia. The governor praised Ohuabunwa as one of the nation’s finest, stating that he truly deserves recognition.
He remarked: “We are here to honor Mazi Samuel Iheanyichukwu Ohuabunwa, OFR. Today, Mazi turns 75; we will gather again when he reaches 85. We are celebrating one of the greatest individuals this country has produced, and that is Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa.”
He acknowledged that Ohuabunwa’s ideals and principles have had a significant impact on both individuals and institutions.
He further stated: “He may disagree with you; however, his patriotism and integrity are unquestionable. He joined Pfizer in 1978, a decade before I graduated. Fifteen years later, he became the managing director and CEO of the multinational corporation, and since then, he has continued to excel and make a difference in the country and beyond.
“When I visited him during the COVID-19 pandemic, he shared his aspiration to run for the presidency. We grappled with this idea—and like myself, many felt disheartened when I expressed my desire to become the governor of Abia State.
I was genuinely concerned about Mazi. Why? I worried about his background and whether he could manage the responsibilities involved.
“So, I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who has come to celebrate one of our own. I assure you that Mazi is truly deserving of this celebration.
“In Abia State, we honor individuals of merit. We don’t concern ourselves with your origins—once you reside here,
