The steadfast position of Nigeria opposing nuclear weapons testing has been reaffirmed by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The president made the announcement while meeting with a CTBTO group at the Presidential Villa. The CTBTO mission was headed by Dr. Robert Floyd, the organization’s executive secretary.
Shettima claims that many African countries, including Nigeria, are dealing with severe socioeconomic problems, such as extreme poverty and the negative effects of climate change.
The development of nuclear weapons capabilities should not be Africa’s immediate concern; the continent must instead address these existential challenges, he emphasised.
No nuclear war has ever ended in a win-win situation; on the contrary, it has always been the opposite. In sub-Saharan Africa, we are engaged in a struggle against poverty and an ecological-economic dilemma. “We should stay out of matters pertaining to nuclear weapons,” he declared.
The Vice President extended his compliments to CTBTO for its wider civilian contributions, including the organization’s ability to detect seismic volcanic activity and tsunamis, as well as its assistance for world ecological stability.
