In Adamawa State, PLWDs have pleaded with Hajiya Lami, the wife of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, to help get a law to domesticate and sign that would establish the Disability Rights Commission in the state.

In March of this year, the Adamawa State House of Assembly established the rights commission and approved a measure criminalising discrimination against individuals with disabilities. The measure would outlaw discrimination against people with disabilities if Governor Ahmadu Fintiri signs it into law.

According to Mr. Jibril Amzaranda, the North East Zonal Coordinator of the Blind Association of Nigeria, the association managed to convince the governor’s wife to get him to sign the law. This came at Friday’s address to journalists in Yola, when he emphasised that the bill will help reduce disability prejudice.

According to him, the bill’s other goal is to ensure that individuals with disabilities have access to healthcare, rehabilitation, education, and vocational training, among other support services.

“It became imperative to plead with the First Lady due to her extensive intervention supports for individuals with disabilities through her pet project, the Fresh Air Pro-Life Employment Foundation,” Amzaranda stated.

He emphasised that his followers should be law-abiding and return Hajiya Lami’s assistance to disabled persons in the state by meeting their varied requirements.
